Llewellyn's
training philosophy
Study all of the methods, throw
out the cruel and inhumane, then use the one that works best with
your dog.
Make use of the dog's natural
behaviour patterns wherever possible.
We, at Llewellyn are fortunate to have the opportunity of
observing the body language of the individuals of a pack when it
is not subject to human interference. We watch as they set their
own rules, their own order, their own system. This provides us
with the means to more effectively communicate, and to apply
posture and actions that are clearly understood by our dogs.
(i.e.: teach a puppy to control his bite by "biting"
his nose.)
Wherever possible convince the
dog that he, not you, causes correction.
If a dog causes discomfort to himself, he is not inclined to
repeat the action, whereas if he knows that you
cause the discomfort,
he is inclined not to repeat the action when you are around!
(i.e.: a mouse trap under a paper will convince a dog not to put
his nose on the table faster than all of your shouting and
discipline.)
Tailor the method to the
individual dog's personality.
There are many different ways to train a dog, and to correct
undesirable behavior. Each dog is an individual, with its own
idiosyncrasies, its own personality; so we select the (humane)
training method to suit each dog. At Llewellyn, each dog is
trained in his own way, in his own time.
