OLD WIVES' TALES -
................................. are they True or False??
Dogs are everywhere, in every society, in every social situation, yet we know very little about them.
There are some pretty weird "facts" about dogs; how many of them are true, how many are absolute nonsense??? ... what do you think?

1) Black roof of a German Shepherd Dog's mouth is proof that he is aggressive.

2) Let a dog lick a wound because a dog's Saliva is antiseptic and will kill germs.

3) A bitch can have a single litter of puppies, and each puppy can have a different father.

4) The King Dobe is recognized by the American Kennel Club, but not by the Canadian Kennel Club.

5) If a bitch is bred to a dog of another breed, she can never produce pure bred puppies again.

6) Drug dogs can find drugs because they are addicted to drugs.

7) Dogs are colour blind.

8) A Pit Bull "locks" on his opponent because once a pit bull begins to bite down, he cannot open his mouth again until his teeth touch.

9) Dogs can predict storms.

10) Bitches should have a litter before spaying.

11) German-bred dogs are better than Canadian-bred dogs

12) The bigger the yard, the happier the dog.

13) Dobes turn on their masters between 8 and 10 months of age.

14) The taste of blood can trigger viciousness in dogs.

15) Dry, warm nose means dog is not healthy.

YOU SAY ........

1] False: There is no genetic link between the colour of the roof of a dog's mouth and aggression. Aggression is a response to a given stimulus, not a state of mind in general.

2] False: Dogs' mouths are infested with the germs of everything they put into it. If you or another animal receives a dog bite, it is like injecting yourself with a large dose of germs, which is why infection is almost inevitable. Don't let your dog excessively lick his own wounds, either. Veterinarians often give wounded dogs elizabethan collars or buckets for their heads to prevent the dog from keeping his wound open or ripping out stiches....on the other hand, a mother licking her pup's wound can debride the area allowing faster healing.

5] False: The bitch ovulates on the second day of the oestrous period (approximately the 11th day of the heat cycle). A day or two after that the bitch is ready to be fertilized. If no fertilization occurs, the bitch will be in season again in another 6 months. If fertilization does occur, the sperm can not live inside the bitch nor change her in any way. ------ Do you agree?

7] True AND False: How would you answer?

8] False: There is no difference between the teeth and musculature in the jaw of a Pit Bull and other breeds. Pit Bulls, Bull Terriers, and similar breeds, have especially strong jaws that can clamp on to a protected arm and support its weight suspended in the air, but if the jaws were locked, he would be unable to chew on a bone, stick, or play with a ball.

9] True: Dogs can sense changes in barometric pressure and alterations in the level of static electricity. Through experience, dogs can predict that these conditions are present before thunderstorms.

11] False: Traditionally, Germans culled litters, ridding the breed of weakness and sickness, therefore strengthening their lines. One should be careful purchasing a dog from another country without having researched the breeder and the dog's background. The Canadian Kennel Club has strict guidelines designed to maintain and improve pure-bred dogs. It is wiser and more convenient to save your money and purchase dog in your own country.

12] False: Most dogs are content to be with their pack members, which means they would prefer to be inside, close to you. Exercise is important. Dogs with room to roam don't necessarily spend more time moving than dogs raised in small apartments.....Question: What about a huge yard????

13] False: Between 8 and 10 months of age is reaching sexual maturity for large breeds of dogs. This is where dominance begins to become more important because the size of the dog is now a factor. Meet every challenge as you did when the dog was a pup--maintain control. Dobes have an especially bad (and unearned) reputation, due to their satanic appearance and because they have been type-cast in movies. If you had a nice dog at 6 months of age, you will still have a nice dog at 10 months of age.

14] False: Viciousness is not linked to the taste of blood. This would indicate that dogs would be after blood, out of hunger for it.

15] False: Dogs with dry noses are perfectly healthy. ... do you agree?
